DIY Gelatin Treatment Recipe

Ingredients:

  • One packet unflavored gelatin, unprepared (I use Knox)

  • 2 tbsp boiling water

  • Approx. 2-4 tbsp conditioner of choice (I used Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Masque)

Instructions:

  1. Empty gelatin powder into a small heat-proof container.

  2. Bloom the gelatin: add 2 tbsp boiling water and whisk until smooth.

  3. Stir in conditioner until the mixture reaches a spreadable consistency. Use immediately.

To Use:

  1. Detangle dry hair gently (I used the Behairful Brush) and separate into sections.

  2. Working from the bottom section up, apply a small amount of the gelatin mask to each section, combing through gently but quickly to thoroughly saturate hair.

  3. Create a two-strand twist with the saturated section from root to tip before moving on to the next section.

  4. Repeat throughout hair, concentrating the mask most in the areas with the most damage or highest porosity.

  5. Once the mask is applied, let it sit on the hair for 15-45 minutes. Product WILL stiffen and harden on the hair so be gentle with your hair to avoid breakage.

  6. After the designated amount of processing time has passed, unwind the twists.

  7. GENTLY rinse and shampoo gelatin mixture out, then follow up with conditioner.

    • If you used a regular conditioner in your gelatin mixture, use a deep conditioner/masque here to ensure appropriate balance. I always use a deep conditioner as my base, so I use my normal Function of Beauty set afterwards to avoid over-moisturizing my hair.

  8. Style and dry as desired, and enjoy the restored bounce and shine!
